Week 2: Design and Connect Your MakeyMakey Project

If you were able to make any of the piano keys on your pencil project work last week, you can move on to the next step this week.

This week:

  1. Choose a project
    • There are some ideas in the Makey Makey kit
    • Great project ideas can be found here - MaKey MaKey Guide
    • You can also do an Internet search for Makey Makey ideas, or come up with your own.
    • Please take your time and pick a project that is both realistic and interesting to you so that you can and will finish in time.
  2. Connect your project to a lesson area (math, science, social studies, reading, or the arts)
  3. Plan your project and get started!

Week 1: Tutorial and Exploring Conductors

Get to Know the Makey Makey
  1. Complete the pencil and piano Makey Makey project.
  2. This one can be tricky, so be sure to follow all the directions
  3. Use the troubleshooting tips if it doesn't work.

This tutorial based on:  http://start-making.org/SketchITPlayITGuide.pdf

Learn About Conductors and Insulators
  1. Read about conductors and take notes.  Don't write down technical jargon you don't understand unless you plan to look it up later.
  2. Use the Note Taking guide in the wgsstudent drive to record your sources and your notes. (see tutorial on the right for directions finding the file).
Read these articles (click on the blue hypertext link to open the article):
"Insulators and Conductors." Britannica School. Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., 2015. Web. 18 Jan. 2015. <http://school.eb.com/levels/elementary/article/476281>.

"Conductors and Insulators." Kids Korner. http://www.fplsafetyworld.com/?ver=kkblue&utilid=fplforkids&id=16185

Things to learn from your research:
  • What types of materials are conductive?
  • Are some conductive materials more conductive than others?
  • Why are people good conductors?
  • What is an insulator?
These are just suggestions.  Find out what YOU want to know about conductors and insulators.

Don't forget to track your progress on your Project Planning Sheet in your folder. Make adjustments to materials list and what you need to accomplish, if needed.
